Eh, just give him a Magic Defibrillator, he'll be fine ;)
Sometimes I think Joss Whedon reads EVERY comment ever made about him. Including about his habit of killing off characters. Because then he does things like have Fury REFERENCE it.... and also
(SERENITY SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN IT. SERIOUSLY, SEE IT. BUT WITH NO SPOILERS)
I went in unspoiled for the original theatrical release, having been prepped only by seeing Joss' previous work, including Firefly thanks to SciFi Channel.
After Book died, I figured "oh, there's our character death! I'll miss 'im. Oh well..."
Then when Wash died I was like "WUT. WUT. WUT JUST HAPPENED I DON'T EVEN OMG HE'S GOING TO KILL THEM ALL ISN'T HE??? DDDDD: OMGOMGOGOGMGOMGFFFFFFUUUUU" And I forgot to analyze for like, the entire rest of the movie. I mean, River's so obviously a final girl, and Mal needed to survive because of the meaning of each of their stories... in hindsight, but I seriously thought every character was going to die for like, 20 minutes straight and it was the best thing ever. First time a movie surprised me enough to throw my forebrain out the window ;)
Also, I'm almost completely convinced that Priya's wonderfully rich story arc (and our exposure to the fantastic Dichen Lachman!) on Dollhouse came about in part because people poked him a lot about not casting any Asians in Firefly.
So, yeah, we need to keep calling him on his tropes and other "oopsies". Because the more self-aware he is and the more you push the man (see: budget of Dr. Horrible), the better stuff you apparently get. ;)
