The bad news entry

Okay, here's the part where things kind of start to suck, but I feel like I should tell you sooner rather than later:

I was trying to hold off on telling you until I was absolutely sure, but it seems pretty clear that I've been living a lie. My real name is Erica Windermere and I don't actually exist* we're not going to be able to get the book on North American shelves any time soon. In fact, I'm hearing that the soonest it might get on shelves is fall of next year. Let me repeat that: fall 2006. It's an issue of timing, of getting it into bookseller catalogues, and of getting it out in a season where it will sell--i.e., the holiday season. It's not out of an unwillingness to sell it; it's a logistical situation. And if that's the hand we're dealt, I think we can make it work just fine, in terms of selling to the general market.

What I'm really concerned about is getting the book in front of people who already know about it and want it--i.e., y'all. I'm trying to see if we can get a North American edition put out on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca. But I don't know when that might happen. If you are in the U.S. (where I am, ironically) or in Canada, and you do want the book, and you don't mind paying the extra shipping, you can get it from Amazon.co.uk, where the new fall releases are already 40% off anyway (as reflected in the £5.39/$9.58 price.) And it's a pretty thick book, so... seriously, that's a fairly good deal. If you want to wait until it gets on an Amazon closer to home, or even until it hits real shelves, that's totally cool. But at the very least, I know that a lot of people have mentioned in comments that they can't decide what to do, and I feel like I should give you the information as I know it, now that it's pretty solid.

* Uh, sorry about that. Em and I got way into Law & Order: Criminal Intent last night.

ETA: I don't know why, but the book seems to be coming out November 1 in Australia.

Aww, that's too bad, I've told plenty of friends about it and we're looking forward to it.

I personally pre-ordered it from amazon.co.uk (I'm in Canada) and am eager for it to get here, I look forward to reading it.

And we all will do our best to be patient until we see it on our shelves!

I think I'll be ordering it from the UK Amazon--I don't want to wait another year!

But honestly, don't worry about it. All of your adoring fans will simply be happy to have the book whenever it comes out.

cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: October 21st, 2005 02:17 am (UTC) (Link)
Whatever's on amazon.com will be the American version. I think. There are very few differences, however--just spelling and a very few things changed (Saran Wrap/Cling Film, Neiman Marcus/Marks & Spencer, that kind of thing).

Never ordered from amazon.com.uk before-- might try it, though. One way or another, I *will* own a copy sooner or later. :-)

I've had excellent experiences ordering from them in the past, it's well worth it. Plus, it'll be the original edition, which, yay!

Amazon UK, here I come!

Well, that seals it for me. I'm definitely going ahead and getting it from Amazon.co.uk. Melted credit cards be damned! I couldn't possibly wait a year for this. Not to mention I will be the envy of a few of my friends. ^_~

My favorite is Law & Order:SVU ^^
lafemmeluna From: lafemmeluna Date: October 22nd, 2005 02:07 am (UTC) (Link)
Yes! Cleo needs to get addicted to that (SVU). And maybe, if we're lucky, parody it. Because the girl can make anything funny...

So, including shipping, it'd be $26? Hmmmm. That's pretty expensive, but not impossible.

Is is possible to buy a quantity yourself (as the author) so that you could sell them personally? I don't know if publishers allow that... I'm just wondering because this happens often with bands. The band will be given (or possibly purchase) a limited amount to sell themselves.

Wow, I'm sure that's disappointing for you. If it were me, I would have told every family member and coworker and acquaintance to buy it!!
elyim From: elyim Date: October 21st, 2005 01:55 am (UTC) (Link)
Yes, yes, everyone buy it from amazon.co.uk! Bring money to our economy! Mwahaha!

I feel sorry for all you American guys, though. Really.

*secretly revels in the rare event that is something being released in the UK long before the US. Ze tables have turned!*

Hey, y'all get Harry Potter early. At least, you did in olden days. Be happy. HAPPY.
From: defined Date: October 21st, 2005 01:57 am (UTC) (Link)
I definitely am going to buy the book from Amazon UK. I want it NOW, haha. Do you know exactly how much shipping (to the US) is?
From: defined Date: October 21st, 2005 02:09 am (UTC) (Link)
Doh. Found it. So it's only $15-ish for the book and shipping, I think. SO BUYING IT TOMORROW.
lolitalolita From: lolitalolita Date: October 21st, 2005 01:58 am (UTC) (Link)
$26CDN, a year before it'll (possibly) be out in NA? Oh it is SO bought! Thanks for the heads up; I'll be here, waiting patiently for 6-10 days, if you need me.
nogah From: nogah Date: October 21st, 2005 02:01 am (UTC) (Link)
Does it mean I'll have to order the book because it'll get to Israel in like, 2078?
lafemmezilla From: lafemmezilla Date: October 21st, 2005 02:04 am (UTC) (Link)
Awe dang! You know that if the UK edition were the only one being released, I'd order it in a heartbeat! But since you're American and we both speak American English, I was kinda looking for an American edition... you know, where it says "elevator" instead of "lift" and the like. Not that I think it'll be less funny, but... you know. And since I WILL buy an American edition no matter when it comes out, I'd hate to buy it twice. Kinda like when LOTR releases a theatrical edition DVD and then a couple months later, releases the EE? That kinda bites.

Thanks for letting us know. I'm pretty patient anyway, I don't mind waiting a while for a US edition. And there's always Lost recaps to help meet my Cleolinda-Recap quota.
ladyvoldything From: ladyvoldything Date: October 21st, 2005 02:06 am (UTC) (Link)
Um, is there any actual difference between the British edition and the North American edition?
cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: October 21st, 2005 02:33 am (UTC) (Link)
I think basic spelling and punctuation, and a very few jokes changed for vocabulary (Saran Wrap/Cling Film, that kind of thing). I don't think there was anything along the lines of elevator/lift or sweater/jumper--just words and phrases that it seemed important to change for clarity.
