Movies in Fifteen Minutes
This is, after all, what happens when you cross the streams.

I'm working away on the book for the final manuscript turn-in date (Jan. 3), but something has come up that I'd like to ask y'all to help me with. Last week, invidereliana posted about her frustration with fundraising--politicians won't help, feel-good TV shows won't help, and the family doesn't have enough money to deal with her mother's illness but still has too much to qualify for most government programs:

I posted to my LJ about real emergencies like my Mum has a very rare cancer, her medical bills have bankrupted us and are still mounting (over $200,000) and to top it off my Dad may be out of work in a week or two due to outsourcing for the second time in four years. Then my Mum will have no insurance and no medical care to be sure she survives this cancer.

She loves to write but is stranded in bed due to chronic pain. She wanted a laptop for Christmas last year, but because her medical care is so high, after 5 surgeries in one year (insurance premiums, co-pays, deductibles, things insurance doesn't cover like 8 trips to Mayo Clinic this past year, hotels, gas, etc) we can't afford one. Not this year either! [...] I'm happy that people are kind and caring enough to help others but what about people like my Mum?

I've been to the family's fundraising site, 4christina.org, and their need is both pretty dire and amply documented. This is the real thing.

So I'm basically putting out a call for anyone who wants to help out to chip in a dollar. I mean, clearly you can give more, but before you scroll on down to the next entry on your friends list, ask yourself--a dollar's easy, right?

Already people have been so incredibly generous, both with financial donations and Christmas gifts for the family. On the other hand, this family's need is so dire that I'd like to see if we can't help them more. I'm trying to log all donations related to LiveJournal or JournalFen just to tally up what people have given, so y'all can see how much good you've done. What I've said on my own journal is, we've already raised $2217.65. If we can bring that up to $5000, I'll post a new "Movies in Fifteen Minutes" here, despite the fact that those are on hold until I finish the book. It's not the most thrilling prize ever, but it's something that's in my power to do. Also, because it's straight parody and not fanfic, I don't think we'll have any legal problems. The choices I'm suggesting are Lemony Snicket and Phantom of the Opera, because I know I'm going to see those movies, and I think either one would do well. So:

How much did you donate to 4christina.org?

This poll is private; only I can see the answers, and I promise you, I'm not keeping track of who gave what, nor do I care. I just want a dollar amount ("1.00") so I can log it into the spreadsheet. If you don't have a LiveJournal, please leave me a comment below with the amount so I can factor it in. If you can't afford or don't want to give, that is perfectly all right (I was stone cold broke last year and wouldn't have been able to do anything either). Information on how to donate via PayPal, Amazon, check or money order, or by shopping Amazon US/UK through 4christina.org is available here.

If we raise enough money, which "Fifteen Minutes" would you rather see?

Lemony Snicket
Phantom of the Opera

If worst comes to worst, finishing the book will take precedence, but that still leaves me open to posting a new M15M as early as January 4. I'm just saying. Thanks in advance for anything y'all can do to help.

P.S. Even if you can't donate anything, mentioning this post on your journal is also a great help. Thanks again. : )

ETA (12/13/04 3 pm): As of right now, we're at $3028.30. Thanks so much to everyone!

Damn, another cause I wish I could support. Between the lack of job and the student loans, I'm pretty much screwed this season. :( Good luck with the funding drive.

It's totally all right--I wouldn't have been able to do it last year. You can mention on your own journal, though, if you want--spreading the word also helps. And thanks. : )

I wish I could donate, but i've been out of work since March. I am going to post the link in my own journal and email it out, though, just in case any of my "better off" friends are able to help.

Aww, thanks. Spreading the word is also a great help. Best of luck with the work situation, too.

It's the same thing. And thanks. : )

I'd been meaning to and you reminded me at the right time. One of the good things about not being broke is that I can share. Thanks, sweetie.

Thanks. I know the feeling--this is the first year in a long while that I haven't been completely broke. : )

I will post this link on my journal and try to publicize it a little, since I am unable to donate. Best of luck!

Thanks! That's a great help in and of itself. : )

ergh, i'd've donated to many people at this point, but i've run into postponement of receiving my debit card & such and therefor setting up a paypal ^_^ within three days, i've been told i should have it, so then, DONATION SPREE!

keep us updated. i really want her family to receive the best help.

This might be a silly question but is there a time limit on the donation time?
cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: December 13th, 2004 07:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
Not really, no. I would certainly say it's open until January, at the very least. And really, just because we close out this particular fundraising drive doesn't mean that the family won't still need help three, four, five months from now.

cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: December 13th, 2004 08:02 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks. : ) I'll sign anything people send me, although I'm going to look into some kind of setup where you can buy books that have already been signed, to minimize the back-and-forth and the expense to y'all.

And yeah, my LJ email is just an alias for my real email--it all goes to the same place. : )

Just gotta tell you, this makes me beam. I love seeing your updates on the total. And M15M is yours, your very own -- you're utilizing it for a good cause without the merest whiff of (well-intentioned) fund-raising-fanfic problems. Delightful.

(Plus I may get to read a new on as early as Jan 4, squee. That's a powerful incentive to kick in a few more shekels.)
cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: December 13th, 2004 08:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Heh. Thanks. : )

I don't know--it's been a wild year for me with the whole M15M thing, you know? I don't know how it happened, but somehow I ended up doing something that people really seem to like, and if I can use that to help people, I mean--why not? I just can't think of any reason not to.

Oy, see, this is one of those few occasions when I wish I could actively participate and, you know -- donate. But, thing is, I haven't a single penny to my name, no Pay Pal account, and I really don't trust the Romanian post with an envelope containing money.

I offered to try and draw a few sketches and send them over to those who will indeed donate if motivated by such, for what little good this might be doing...
cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: December 13th, 2004 08:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
I totally understand. I've talked to a lot of people who really wanted to help but couldn't afford it, or were outside the U.S. and couldn't get a PayPal account, and I really think just the thought counts for so much here. If you do draw, you might think about doing something special for Christina and Jillian (sapphireisle) and sending it as a Christmas card or something.
alpheratz From: alpheratz Date: December 13th, 2004 07:19 pm (UTC) (Link)
This is donated to 4christina total, not "since you posted the last poll," right?

Never mind, I didn't notice that this is in the comm, not in your personal LJ. Sorry!

Couldn't fit my whole answer in the box- I'm collecting money from my family members to see how much I can get so I can send it all in together.

Happy early birthday, yes?
cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: December 13th, 2004 08:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Awesome! Thanks--you can update your answer when you're finished. It'll only let you have one answer, so it'll overwrite your first one, and you won't get counted twice or anything.
kay_wray From: kay_wray Date: December 13th, 2004 07:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
I already logged in at your other poll but I just wanted to say that, while a M15M would be fun, don't sweat it. The fact that you've leveraged your flists to bring attention to this family's need is enough. You are awesome *g*
cleolinda From: cleolinda Date: December 13th, 2004 08:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! And yeah, I figure y'all would forgive me for working on ten M15Ms instead of one. But I didn't feel comfortable bringing it up on this list unless I made it relate somehow, so...
